Silent Cube System

Retention Period

In conjunction with the Compliance Option, you can define a standard retention period for files stored in volumes created on Silent Cubes (see chapter 3). The retention period can be defined for all volume types except the WORM volume type.

Please note:

  • Volumes themselves do not have a retention period. The default setting applies to stored files from the time of archiving.

  • However, individually set retention dates are also supported, which are set by software via an access timestamp for each file.

  • Retention dates can subsequently be extended, but not shortened.

  • The default setting can be changed at any time and then applies to all files newly stored from that point onward.

  • Files can be deleted once the access timestamp lies in the past, i.e. once the retention period (retention date) has expired.

Example 1: A file without a specific access timestamp was stored on 1 January 2020 in a volume with a configured retention period of 5 years. The file can be deleted from 1 January 2025 onward. Using software, the retention date can be set to any date after 1 January 2025, but not before.

Example 2: A file was assigned the access timestamp 1 June 2035 by the archiving software and was transferred on 1 January 2020 to the volume (with retention period, not RWRO-triggered) with a configured retention period of 15 years. The retention date is 1 June 2035. If, on the other hand, a retention period of 10 years was configured, the file is assigned the retention date 1 January 2030.
