To understand some of the functions and settings of the Silent Cube storage system, a basic knowledge of the storage management principle is required.
Cache and archive storage
The Silent Cube storage system has cache storage and archive storage. The cache storage is located in the Head Unit of the Silent Cube storage system, with the capacity of the cache storage varying depending on the product selected. The use of cache and archive storage improves performance and provides a wide range of additional functions for the long-term archiving of data.
Externally, both storage media are transparent and therefore neither directly recognizable, nor is the distinction between them of great relevance once configuration has been completed.
File system
The Silent Cube storage system has its own virtual file system. The file system is managed on the cache storage. The virtual file system makes it possible, for example, to create volumes spanning several Silent Cubes (not recognizable externally), to change the capacity of volumes, or to create WORM volumes with retention whose archive data can be destroyed after a defined retention period. Furthermore, the file system is characterized by the highest security features: should the cache storage ever fail or become defective, the file system can be completely restored after replacing the Head Unit.
